Statement on the 42nd General Election

The Honourable Greg Rickford made the following statement regarding the 42nd General Election, which was called on Sunday.

“This election provides Canadians with a clear choice between the proven, strong leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and the risky, unaffordable promises of Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair.

“The global economy remains uncertain and unstable; this is not the time for risky tax and spend policies that will run Canada into deficit.

“The NDP and Liberals have opposed every measure that supports or reflects the values, traditions and economic priorities of northwestern Ontarians. For example, they have ignored law abiding hunters, farmers and sport shooters by promising to bring back the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry.  They have ignored families by promising to raise taxes through their reckless high tax and high debt approach.

“I know that many families in Northern Ontario want the flexibility to care for their children in a manner that suits them.   I believe that parents are the only people who can choose what is best for their children.  That is why our government enhanced the Universal Child Care Benefit to put more money in the pockets of every single Canadian family with children.

“Only our Conservative Party can be trusted to keep taxes low and protect the rights of law abiding firearms owners.  It was our government that introduced the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act to reduce needless red tape while increasing safety measures.  The reality is that criminals do not register their firearms, a fact that Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau do not understand.

“I have been a strong voice for this region and I am confident that voters will judge me based on my proven record of delivering results for northwestern Ontario since 2008.
